Let Them Wear Cake: Rihanna for FentyxPuma
Rihanna is a household name. Since her very first single Pon de Replay which debuted in 2005 she has accrued an insurmountable amount of celebrity. From performing live at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show to her appearance in the iconic cheerleading film Bring It On: All or Nothing, she has worn many hats and all of them have complemented her facial structure.
Another hat awarded to her was fashion creative director of Puma. While this is not Rihanna’s first furlough into fashion with her 2011 Armani line, this was the first time she has been awarded such a title. In December 2014 it was announced that she would become the creative director of the fashion sportswear brand Puma. This position would give her oversight over Puma’s apparel and footwear.
Recently Rihanna presented a runaway in Paris for her sophomore Fenty x Puma collection that combined the luxury of Versaille with athleisure. The 2017 line displayed a sweet decadence with its use of vivid pastels, delicate designs as well as the use of mesh, bows, and lace. Rihanna told Dazed and Confused the inspiration of the collection was based on the ideas that, “If Marie Antoinette was going to the gym and needed something to wear.” Needless to say, the collections use of pearls, corsets, flower detail and silk communicated that exceptionally.
The line was met with critical praise and has awarded the all-powerful singer with the shoe of the year award. The shoe is from her puma sneaker collection line FENTY. It featured the classic puma sneaker in pastel suede with a platform creeper sole. All in all giving the consumer a comfortable, interesting, tall, and funky fresh shoe option.
While maintaining the royal decadence from art to functional apparel, the collection came out just as engaging, interesting, and effortless as the queen herself.
This collection is an exciting step for the brand. The complex extravagance added to the exercise label sets it apart from its competitors. The exciting fresh air she is bringing to the sports apparel brand is a beloved sight and hopefully, if the collections keep coming, a gift that gives in the cool-kid way only Rihanna can hope to achieve.
